Teen Beach Movie 2

Disney Channel
Have you seen Teen Beach Movie? When it first debuted on the Disney Channel a few years ago,  I wasn't sure I would like it. I used to love the old Frankie and Annette beach movies, in part because they were so campy, but I didn't think it would work with modern kids. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the music and craziness of those old films was alive and well in Teen Beach Movie. It was funny and ridiculous, yet very cute. Bean absolutely loved it!

As a result, we knew we had to watch Teen Beach Movie 2 and see what happened when our favorite beach movie characters suddenly appeared in the real world. This movie was also funny and over the top, with lots of musical numbers. However,  it also explored what can happen when summer is over and a summer romance is faced with the complications of going back to school. I also liked the way Layla wanted to be something more than what was expected of her in the movie world.

Although sad at times, Bean and I loved the music of  Teen Beach Movie 2 just as much as the first one. If you missed it on the Disney Channel, be sure to check your local retailers because it's already available on DVD.  And for some behind the scenes magic and a chance to learn a few of The outrageous dance steps, visit the official website.

Halloween is coming to the Disney Channels!

Disney
It's nearly time for Halloween again, and that means movies, magic, and fun, fun, fun! Disney Junior is set to kick off their Boo For You Halloween programming starting this today. Special episodes of Sofia the First, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, and Doc McStuffins will appear each Friday all month long.

The Disney Channel is also planning a special Monstober line-up featuring Halloween episodes from several of their popular series as well as Disney Channel original movies. New episodes of Dog with a Blog, Girl Meets World, and Jessie air tonight. Phineas and Ferb scare up some fun in "Night of the Living Pharmacists" alongside a new Gravity Falls on Saturday night, while Austin and Ally and Liv and Maddie will be on Sunday. Some of the movies this month include Under Wraps, Girl vs. Monster,  both Twitches films, and all four Halloweentown movies. And since it's Disney,  there will most likely be a new Halloween movie as well.

Disney XD will also get in on the fun beginning October 17.  Lab Rats, Mighty Med, the 7D, and Marvel's Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. will all have special Halloween episodes. An animated cross-over featuring the cast of Jessie and Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man: Web-Warriors is also set to debut in October.

With all of the new episodes and great movies,  it should be a Monstober to remember. And since Halloween is my favorite time of year,  I can't wait!

Star Wars Forces of Destiny

All images:  Lucasfilm
Disney and Lucasfilm have created a new series of animated shorts featuring the heroic ladies of the Star Wars Universe.  The series will launch in July, and a two-part tv special will air on the Disney Channel this fall. They've also created "Adventure Figures" (a cross between dolls and action figures) of the heroines that look amazing.

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny

For more details, check out the press release below:

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny

Disney and Lucasfilm today announced Star Wars Forces of Destiny, a new initiative celebrating the inspiring stories of iconic heroes from across the Star Wars universe. An original series of animated shorts (each 2-3 minutes in length) will explore exciting, all new adventures of key characters including Rey, Jyn Erso, Sabine Wren, Princess Leia, Ahsoka Tano and others, ahead of books and a TV special later in the year. The stories will also be supported by a line of toys from Hasbro, including new ‘Adventure Figures’ – a fusion between traditional dolls and action figures, creating a whole new way to play Star Wars.

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny

“Star Wars Forces of Destiny is for anyone who has been inspired by Leia’s heroism, Rey’s courage, or Ahsoka’s tenacity,” said Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm. “We’re thrilled that so many of the original actors are reprising their roles in these shorts which capture the small moments and everyday decisions that shape who these characters are. It is a fun new way for people to experience Star Wars.”

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny

Developed by Lucasfilm Animation, Star Wars Forces of Destiny will remain true to the Star Wars canon, showing how choices both big and small ultimately shape the destinies of beloved characters.

Launching in July, the animated micro-series will be available on Disney YouTube ahead of a two-part TV special featuring eight additional shorts on Disney Channel in Fall 2017.

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny

Fans will be delighted to hear familiar voices in the series, including: Daisy Ridley (Rey), Felicity Jones (Jyn), Tiya Sircar (Sabine), Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka Tano) and Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata as narrator).

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny

Star Wars Forces of Destiny will also be supported by global product extensions, such as books, apparel, bedding, and toys – including the new line of ‘Adventure Figures’ created by Hasbro, which bridges the gap between traditional action figures and dolls. Each individually designed figure features dynamic action, like Rey swinging her lightsaber, along with multiple points of articulation to help recreate the characters’ adventures and heroic moments with different poses.

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny

“From Princess Leia to Sabine Wren, Star Wars heroines are unique, and we wanted to represent that in the product line for Star Wars Forces of Destiny,” said Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media.

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny Adventure Figures

“The result is the creation of our new ‘Adventure Figures’ that celebrate the power and stories of these incredible characters and allow kids to recreate their most heroic moments at home.”

The 11-inch figures will depict characters including Rey, Jyn Erso, Princess Leia, Sabine Wren, plus loveable sidekicks and epic villains like BB-8, Chewbacca, Kylo Ren and many more.

Hasbro is also rolling out Star Wars Forces of Destiny role play and accessories—from Rey’s Extendable Staff, to a new, electronic Jedi Power Lightsaber toy, which are part of the Star Wars Bladebuilders system.

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny Adventure Figure

Adds John Frascotti, President of Hasbro: “As the Star Wars fan base has broadened over the last 40 years, we have continued to add new and exciting play experiences to the Star Wars brand, to engage fans across generations."

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny Adventure Figure

"We’ve worked closely with Disney to bring the storytelling from Star Wars Forces of Destiny to life through this innovative toy line to help connect with new audiences as well as appeal to existing fans.”

Disney Junior

Disney
Disney has created a new channel perfect for little ones. Aimed at the pre-school and elementary school set, Disney Junior is where the magic never ends, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Featuring shows such as Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and Chuggington, Disney Junior is also the home of new shows like Doc McStuffins and Playhouse Disney classics like Rolie Polie Olie. Personally, I'm hoping they'll bring back other Playhouse Disney favorites, like PB&J Otter. I loved them and Rolie Polie Olie, although I didn't see them until I was in my 20s. Disney Junior is currently available in select markets, but should be expanding soon. To see if Disney Junior is available in your area, please visit the Disney Junior Channel website.

Disney Channel Halloween Movies

Disney
Every year, the Disney Channel debuts another Halloween movie. There have been many great movies over the years. The Halloweentown series and Twitches are a few of my favorites. (Though I also love the really corny films such as Under Wraps and Mom's Got a Date With a Vampire.)

This years film is called Invisible Sister. It stars Rowan Blanchard, Riley of Girl Meets World, and Paris Berelc, Skylar of Mighty Med, as sisters Cleo and Molly. Molly is the older of the two. She's captain of the lacrosse team, popular, and very outgoing. Cleo is a bit goth and a bit nerdy, with a serious head for science. The sisters couldn't be more different. The night before Molly is set to compete in a High School lacrosse tournament, Cleo is busy trying to complete the science experiment her teacher unexpectedly assigned. Cleo accidentally creates a concoction that turns a moth invisible. When the moth lands in Molly's drink, she swallows it, turning her invisible, too. As the sisters realize what has happened, they race to set things right, learning a lot about each other (and the difficulties of being "invisible") in the process. Everything comes together during the annual Romp the Swamp Halloween bash, where the sisters and their friends, including Cleo's nerdy friend George (played by Karan Brar, Ravi on Jessie and Bunk'd), work together to save Molly from a lifetime of invisibility.

I loved this movie. Bean and I watched it when it premiered and plan to watch it again. I really liked the way each sister learned from stepping into the other's shoes for a day. And while there were a lot of funny moments, in the end, it was a movie about the bonds of family. And that may be my favorite type.

If you missed the premiere if Invisible Sister, it's airing again tonight at 8:05pm Eastern time as well as next Saturday, 10/17, at 7:00pm. Disney is also showing Halloweentown, Twitches, Under Wraps, and Mom's Got a Date With a Vampire over the next two weeks. One movie airs each weekday at 3:00am Eastern time. That's a bit early, so don't forget to set your DVR.

Elena of Avalor A Day to Remember

Disney
Tonight is the premiere of a very special episode of Elena of Avalor on the Disney Channel. The episode, called "A Day to Remember," celebrates El Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The holiday, which is celebrated in Mexico and other areas of Latin America, honors the memory of loved ones who have died. In this episode, Elena and her sister Isabel celebrate their first holiday without their parents, and struggle to come to terms with the bittersweet memories of their lives.

Elena of Avalor "A Day to Remember" airs at 7:00 PM Eastern on the Disney Channel.

More Free? At Disney's Hollywood Studios

Disney's Hollywood Studios also has several free items that can be found within the park. As with the Magic Kingdom, there are maps, times guides, buttons, and stickers from cast members. However, Hollywood Studios has several unique freebies of it's own. If you have small children, you'll probably watch the Playhouse Disney Live Onstage show. During the show, tissue paper confetti will rain down on the audience. The shape of the confetti changes whenever they change the lineup of Playhouse Disney shows that are featured during the stage show. The last time I was there, it was large tissue paper leaves, which Bean gathered up to put in her scrapbook.

Another fun thing for kids can be found just after entering the Rockin' Roller Coaster area. On the left, they have a kids area set up where kids can decorate a large paper CD with stickers and take it home. They also give the kids magnet frames advertising new Disney Channel shows. Although this was the first time I had seen this kids area, it looked like it was expected to stay.

One of the coolest kids freebies is from Block Party Bash. At the end of the show, small red, yellow, green or blue Nerf balls, emblazoned with the Block Party Bash logo are shot out over the audience. While not everyone gets one during busy times, most of the kids will get one, either from the ones shot into the air, or from the ones cast members pass out so that everyone can have one of the balls.

At most of the table service restaurants, kids are given fun menus that are specific to the restaurant, with activities in addition to the menu. They have cool games and pictures and can be fun to take with you at the end of the meal. However, interesting free stuff isn't just for the kids. At the Hollywood Brown Derby, they serve fantastic food, and copies of the recipes. At the reservation desk, you can request copies of the recipes for the Cobb salad and Grapefruit cake, both of which are amazing. The recipes are printed on the back of a card that is shaped like the Brown Derby logo. When I ate at the restaurant, they told me that you can also request the recipe for the dish that you order and the chef will provide it. Whether you eat at the restaurant or not, you should request the recipes at the reservation desk. They will be happy to provide them.

Heaven forbid you should have to make a trip to the nurses station, but if you do, they give out Nurse Minnie stickers. Another fun free item is an extra fast pass. Toward the end of the night, if the fast pass stations are still open, I like to get a fast pass for my favorite ride and keep it to put in my scrapbook. The fast passes have the logo for the ride at the top and are a fun way to remember a favorite ride.

Magic of Disney Animation Closing

All images: Disney
I was sad to hear that Disney has announced that it is closing the Magic of Disney Animation at Hollywood Studios on July 12. While I know that this closing will make space for additional new attractions (fingers crossed for more Pixar or Star Wars!), I will miss the Animation Academy.

I have only stopped in to learn to draw characters a few times, but it's always packed and well worth the wait. While rumors abound about what will take the place of the building, nothing has been announced about whether or not the Animation Academy will move to a new location or simply be ended. I hope Disney reopens it in a new, larger location with better seating, but only time will tell. Perhaps we'll learn more during the D23 convention in August.

In the meantime,  there are quite a few videos on the Disney Parks youtube channel that will teach you how to draw Disney characters. Here's a video to help you learn to draw Joy from Inside Out.

Frozen: Northern Lights

Disney/LEGO
Disney has added more Frozen fun to their line-up. Frozen: Northern Lights is an all new story from the Kingdom of Arendelle. There will be a series of books, Lego shorts and digital additions. Starting in July, fans can follow Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven on an adventure to restore the glimmer of the Northern Lights.

A storybook, "Disney's Frozen: Northern Lights: Journey to the Lights," will arrive in stores in July and feature a new character named Little Rock. (I bet he's a troll.) The Lego shorts will air on the Disney Channel this fall, with all of the original voices returning to their roles.

In celebration of the new series, the Frozen website will be updated with fun new activities. Disney is also launching a new Frozen inspired Instagram account.  For more information on Frozen Northern Lights: Journey to the Lights, visit the Penguin Random House website.

Disney's Ultimate Princess Celebration

Starting Now - Brandy
Disney

The stories of Disney's princesses are beloved around the world. To recognize their impact, especially when encouraging courage and kindness, Disney has created the Ultimate Princess Celebration. This global, year-long event will include a new 30 minute special on the Disney Channel in August, two new books: Tales of Courage and Kindness and The Ultimate Princess Celebration Story Collection, a concert tour, toys and collectibles, and much more. To kick off the celebration, Brandy has recorded a new song called "Starting Now." It's positively delightful.

Calling All The Monsters!

Thriii

Can you believe it has been 10 years since China Anne McClain first sang her Halloween anthem "Calling All The Monsters" for Disney Channel's A.N.T. Farm?  The original music video featured China and her sisters going to a haunted house.

To celebrate this anniversary, China got her family together, including her sisters as the group Thriii and her brother who performs as Messenger, to create an all new, and much spookier, music video, with a few new lyrics.

This new song made its debut in the Disney Channel remake of Under Wraps last Friday and will arrive on DisneyPlus on October 8th.

Tangled Ever After

Disney
We absolutely love Tangled at out house, so we were excited to find out that Disney will be releasing a new Tangled short on the Disney Channel next spring. Disney announced the new film at the D-23 Expo. They haven't released too many details about the storyline, but Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi will return as the voices of Rapunzel and Flynn.

Pixie Hollow Games

Disney has an all-new Fairy adventure set to air on the Disney Channel this fall. Pixie Hollow Games will feature your favorite fairies in a three-day Olympic style competition. According to Disney, the games will be "an incredible edge-of-your-seat sports spectacle filled with pixie pageantry, fantastic fairy events and humorous surprises." The story is centered around Rosetta, a new arrival Chloe, and other garden fairies as they attempt to break the garden fairies' losing streak. The reigning champions are storm fairies Rumble and Glimmer, who decide to boost up the challenge and make the games the most fantastic competition ever. The website for the show features games and challenges for kids to compete in, as well as training videos from your favorite fairies. Disney is also hosting an art contest for kids to create their own comic strip of fairies training for the games. The grand prize winner will receive a flat screen tv, blu-ray player, Fairies blu-ray collection, Hallmark fairy party supplies, and 5 one-month Pixie Hollow Membership Cards for the winner and her friends. Ten first prize winners will also receive a one-month Pixie Hollow Membership Card and the Fairies blu-ray collection.

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny Specials Coming in October

Disney
A new trailer has been released for two Star Wars: Forces of Destiny specials. The half hour shows will air on October 1 and 29 on the Disney Channel. Afterward, they will also be available on Disney's YouTube. The specials will be made up of the previously released shorts featuring Rey, Jyn Erso, Sabine, Leia, Ahsoka Tano, and Padme Amidala, as well as 8 new ones. The new shorts will include additional characters, such as Han Solo, Hera Syndulla, Finn, Maz Kanata, and more.

Disney originally launched Forces of Destiny to show the powerful female characters of the Star Wars universe. However, as Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said, they are, "for anyone who has been inspired by Leia's heroism, Rey's courage, or Ahsoka's tenacity." And the shorts all fit in with the existing Star Wars storylines. Story Group member Carrie Beck said, "One of the opportunities here was to tell the stories in between the larger moments and imagine some of the ways our characters have crossed. It's all part of the larger swath of storytelling."

It's Looking Grim For Mal in Descendants 3

Disney
Disney has released a new teaser for Descendants 3 called "Mal's Darkness." It looks like Mal is in for a major battle against the dark forces that threaten her future.

Here's the official synopsis from Disney:

Mal (Dove Cameron), Evie (Sofia Carson), Carlos (Cameron Boyce) and Jay (BooBoo Stewart) return to the Isle of the Lost to recruit a new batch of villainous offspring to join them at Auradon Prep. When a barrier breach jeopardizes the safety of Auradon during their departure off the Isle, Mal resolves to permanently close the barrier, fearing that nemeses Uma (China Anne McClain) and Hades (Cheyenne Jackson) will wreak vengeance on the kingdom. Despite her decision, an unfathomable dark force threatens the people of Auradon, and it's up to Mal and the VKs to save everyone in their most epic battle yet.

Descendants 3 will air on the Disney Channel this summer.

We Call It Imagineering - Episode 1

We Call It Imagineering
Disney

Disney has created a new behind-the-scenes series that was inspired by the TV specials Walt Disney made to introduce Disneyland. This new series, which is available exclusively on YouTube, gives fans a chance to see the imagineering that goes into creating the magic at Disney Parks and the Disney Cruise Line. The first episode is called "Audio-Animatronics" and provides a sneak peek at the characters that will soon be a part of Tiana's Bayou Adventure.

This series is fascinating. Walt Disney once said, "There’s really no secret about our approach. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious. And curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." That doesn't make it any less amazing. Keep an eye out for new episodes coming to Walt Disny Imagineering's YouTube channel soon.
