"Puff, the Magic Dragon" - Peter, Paul, and Mary

Peter, Paul, and Mary
Peter, Paul, and Mary 25th Anniversary Concert

This was one of my favorite songs as a child. We would often sing together on long car trips and this song came up quite often. This performance of Puff by Peter, Paul, and Mary was filmed at their 25th Anniversary Concert in 1986.

And in case you're curious like me, here's the story of how "Puff, the Magic Dragon" came to be. In 1959, a 19-year-old student named Leonard Lipton was inspired by an Ogden Nash poem to write his own poem about an ageless dragon and his playmate, little Jackie Paper, called "Puff, the Magic Dragon". Lipton was friends with Peter Yarrow's housemate and used Yarrow's typewriter to write down the poem.

He then forgot about the poem until several years later when he heard Yarrow was looking for him to give him credit for writing the lyrics to a song Yarrow had composed. While the lyrics have changed slightly over the years to include both girls and boys, one verse from the original poem never made it's way into the song. In it, Puff found a new playmate sometime after Jackie left and was happy once again. The original typed poem has been lost, but the song remains popular today.

Peter Yarrow was one of the three members of the folk group Peter, Paul, and Mary alongside Mary Travers and Noel Paul Stookey. He passed away yesterday at the age of 86.

Paddington Bear Returns

Paddington Bear Returns
StudioCanal

A new trailer had arrived for Paddington in Peru and it looks delightful. Paddington and his family, the Browns, are off on a quest through the jungles of Peru to discover why his Aunt Lucy has gone missing.

Here's the official synopsis from StudioCanal & Sony:

Get ready for the journey of a lifetime as "Paddington In Peru" brings the world’s most beloved bear back to his roots, his homeland Peru. Following the adventures of "Paddington" and "Paddington 2", Paddington is still living happily with the Brown family in Windsor Gardens. When he receives a letter from the Reverend Mother, the blithe guitar strumming nun who runs the Home for Retired Bears, informing him that Aunt Lucy misses him dearly, he knows he simply must visit her as soon as possible.

With his shiny new British passport in hand, Paddington is joined by the Browns, including the ever-resourceful Mrs. Bird, on an epic journey that none of them will ever forget. Along the way the group meet new friends, including the dashing riverboat captain Hunter and his daughter Gina. They join them on their thrilling escapades through the Amazon rainforest and up to the stunning mountain peaks of Peru. Together they encounter unexpected challenges, and Paddington begins to uncover surprising secrets about his past. Throughout the ups and downs, his unwavering optimism and kindness shine brightly in this brand-new Paddington cinematic adventure that reinforces the importance of family, and the joy of embracing one's heritage.

Paddington in Peru arrives in UK and Irish cinemas on November 8th and in US theaters on January 17 February 14, 2025.

Paddington in Peru

Paddington in Peru
All images: StudioCanal

I love the Paddington Bear movies. The adorable little bear in a duffle coat, who always has an marmalade sandwich under his hat (in case of emergencies, of course), has the ability to make everyone around him happy. (A truly remarkable skill!) I can't wait to see his next adventure with the Brown family: a trip to Peru to visit his Aunt Lucy.

Here's the official synopsis from StudioCanal & Sony:

"Paddington in Peru" brings Paddington's story to Peru as he returns to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now resides at the Home for Retired Bears. With the Brown Family in tow, a thrilling adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey through the Amazon rainforest and up to the mountain peaks of Peru.

Matilda The Musical

Netflix's Matilda
Netflix

Matilda The Musical is coming to Netflix this Christmas. Roald Dahl's delightful story of a truly exceptional girl has always been one of my favorites (both the book and the movie). I can't wait to see how this new version turns out.

Matilda The Musical arrives on Netflix on December 25.

Duffy And Friends And The Morning Glory

Disney
Duffy is the adorable Mickey-faced teddy bear first found in Tokyo Disney. He's had several origin stories, but this is the current story according to Disney.

"One day in Cape Cod, Mickey Mouse the sailor was leaving on a long sea voyage. Minnie Mouse didn’t want Mickey to be lonely, so she hand-sewed him a cuddly teddy bear to keep him company and gave the bear to Mickey in a duffel bag, which inspired him to name the bear “Duffy.” Together, Duffy and Mickey share adventures – big and small – and make new friends along the way."

Duffy has met many new friends over the years, including:
  • ShellieMae - Duffy's teddy bear girlfriend
  • Gelatoni - a green kitty cat who loves to paint
  • StellaLou - a lavender bunny who loves to dance
  • CookieAnn - a puppy who loves to cook
  • 'Olu Mel - a green sea turtle who loves to sing and play the ukulele
Duffy and his friends have had many adventures, and now there's an adorable video where the friends try to grow several "Morning Glory" seeds.

This video would be perfect to share with little ones. It's so sweet to see the friends work together and share when thing don't quite go as expected.

Star Wars Little Golden Books

I adore Little Golden Books! I love the retro pictures and classic stories. My favorites feature characters from Disney, Marvel, or Star Wars and are perfect for introducing young kids to these stories.

The latest Star Wars Little Golden Books will be released in July, and they look adorable! The four books include: I am a Hero, Heroes and Villains Collection, The Big Golden Book of Starships, Speeders and Space Stations, and The Big Golden Book of Aliens, Creatures, and Beasts.

I am a Hero includes scenes from Rogue One, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens. The book features brave heroes from the saga, such as Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, Finn, Rey, and Poe.

The Heroes and Villains Little Golden Book Collection features six previously released I am a... stories and the new I am a Hero, all in one hardcover volume. The six other titles are: I am a Jedi, I am a Droid, I am a Pilot, I am a Princess, I am a Sith,  and I am a Stormtrooper.

The Big Golden Book of Starships, Speeders, and Space Stations is packed with stories about the incredible vehicles of the Star Wars Universe: from A-wings to X-wings and Death Stars to Star Destroyers.

The Big Golden Book of Aliens, Creatures, and Beasts contains stories about amazing Star Wars aliens, from banthas and wampas to Ewoks and Wookies.

Figment's Brush with the Masters Scavenger Hunt

Disney
The EPCOT International Festival of the Arts is full of art, food, and fun for the whole family. The festival, which takes place each weekend through February 20th, has a lot to see and do, including a scavenger hunt hosted by Figment. Figment's Brush with the Masters Scavenger Hunt invites kids to search around the World Showcase for some of the world's greatest masterpieces.

To play along, just purchase a map and stickers for $6.99. As you reach each Pavilion, search for artwork with Figment hidden somewhere inside. Once you spot the playful dragon, put the matching sticker on the map at the right Pavilion. When you've finished, turn in the map at a retail location for a surprise. (The surprise is an adorable Figment framed art pin.)

The hunt, which is aimed at young kids, runs every weekend of the festival.

The Magic of Storytelling

Disney kicked off their fifth annual Magic of Storytelling recently. This year, they will donate up to one million books to First Book, a nonprofit that gives new books to teachers and low-income families, between now and March 31. A commercial voiced by Emma Watson, who stars as bookworm Belle in the upcoming Beauty and the Beast, launched the campaign.

The Magic of Storytelling strives to inspire imaginations, encourage a lifelong love of reading, and bring books to underserved communities across America. Families are encouraged to read together during the second annual Disney Reads Day on February 4. Families can read at he or visit a participating Disney Store or Barnes and Noble for story-time, activities, and giveaways.

Disney will donate one book for each of the following actions:
  • One for One Book Donation - purchase an eligible book from the Disney Store or other participating retailers.
  • Share a Shelfie - take a "shelfie", a selfie with a favorite book or in front of a bookshelf, using the hashtag #MagicOfStorytelling on Instagram or Twitter
  • Disney Story Central - download digital books designed for parents and kids to read together. Disney will donate a book for every book read in the app
  • Magic of Storytelling Sweepstakes - enter to win 400 books for your school and a personal library, too.
  • Celebrate Disney Reads Day on February 4 - enjoy free family-friendly events: storytime, coloring, activities, and themed "shelfie" stations
  • For more information, visit magicofstorytelling.com
In addition to the donations, Disney has created resources for schools to encourage reading in class and at home. They include lesson plans, reading activities, and more.

Uniqlo at Disney Springs

I had the chance to check out Uniqlo shortly after it opened in July. I have to say, I instantly fell in love! They have some of the coolest clothes and their prices are fantastic.

Uniqlo is a Japanese company that has stores around the world, although there aren't many in the US yet. The Disney Springs location is their first store in the southeast.

The two story building houses a wide variety of casual clothing, from Disney themed t-shirts to shirts designed to help you regulate your body temperature in hot or cold weather.

They also have fun Japanese inspired graphic tees, and even kimonos and adorable paper samurai costumes for kids and adults alike.

They're Disney and Marvel clothes were very unique, and could quite easily fill my closet. I especially liked the selection of Little Green Men shirts. As you know, I'm addicted to collecting Little Green Men, so I had to have one.

They also carry an awesome selection of Disney iron-on patches. They're happy to apply them to t-shirts, button down shirts, shorts, or pants for both kids and adults. If I had to wear office wear, I'd definitely get the Star Wars heads set for my shirts.

In all, I think Uniqlo is a fantastic addition to Disney Springs. The selection and prices make them well worth a visit. Whether you are looking for Disney clothes, vacation wear, or something new for casual Friday, be sure to stop by Uniqlo. You'll be glad you did.

Avengers Lowes Build and Grow

The Avengers are returning to Lowes Build and Grow Workshops this summer. This year, the characters are from DisneyXD's Avengers: Ultron Revolution. Each build will feature a character and a base, which when pushed together will form the Avengers logo. The fun starts with Captain America on June 11. Next up is Iron Man on June 25, Falcon on July 9, Thor on July 23, Black Widow on August 13, and finally Hulk on August 27. Kids will also receive a patch with each build, that form a picture when put together. Sign ups begin on May 30, and if last year is any indication, you'll want to sign up early to make sure you can reserve your child a spot.

Elf on the Shelf

If your family has an elf on the shelf, you probably know how difficult it can be to come up with new ideas for your elf. I've gathered together hundreds of great ideas on my Elf on the Shelf Pinterest board. I especially like the printable Darth Vader mask and glow stick lightsaber. I think it would be a great way to celebrate the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Miles from Tomorrowland

Disney
Bean and I love Miles from Tomorrowland on Disney JuniorMiles and his sister Loretta travel the galaxy with their parents, Captain Phoebe Callisto and Engineer Leo Callisto. Along with their robo-ostrich Merc, they solve problems and have amazing adventures while working missions for the Tomorrowland Transit Authority. (The TTA is run by Admirals Watson and Crick, named for the scientists who discovered the chemical composition of DNA. That's just one of many little scientific in-jokes for the parents who are watching.) It's a really cute show that does a great job of explaining basic science concepts so that kids will understand them.

I love the show overall, but I especially like the guest stars. Disney does a great job of choosing a character that perfectly represents a specific person.

The most recent episode featured the voice talents of Alton Brown, host of Cutthroat Kitchen among other shows on Food Network, as a chef named Lysander Floovox. It also featured a scientist named Professor Rubicon who is voiced by the legendary Bill Nye, the Science Guy. Other guest stars have included Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher, Star Trek: TNG) as Commander S'Leet, Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker, Star Wars) as Gadfly Garnet, and George Takei (Hikaru Sulu, Star Trek) as Spectrix. It's a sci-fi nerd's dream come true!

Subway Star Wars Kids Meals

It seems that Subway has new bags for their kids meals. With artwork inspired by the Force Awakens, each bag also contains a glowstick lightsaber with a handle that you decorate with a sticker. They're kinda cool! There are 8 different bags available: a blueprint of the Millennium Falcon, BB-8, two Stormtrooper bags, Kylo Ren, and two with everybody. My favorite is the Millennium Falcon bag, how about you?
