Elena of Avalor A Day to Remember

Tonight is the premiere of a very special episode of Elena of Avalor on the Disney Channel. The episode, called "A Day to Remember," celebrates El Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The holiday, which is celebrated in Mexico and other areas of Latin America, honors the memory of loved ones who have died. In this episode, Elena and her sister Isabel celebrate their first holiday without their parents, and struggle to come to terms with the bittersweet memories of their lives.

Elena of Avalor "A Day to Remember" airs at 7:00 PM Eastern on the Disney Channel.

Miles from Tomorrowland

Bean and I love Miles from Tomorrowland on Disney Junior. Miles and his sister Loretta travel the galaxy with their parents, Captain Phoebe Callisto and Engineer Leo Callisto. Along with their robo-ostrich Merc, they solve problems and have amazing adventures while working missions for the Tomorrowland Transit Authority. (The TTA is run by Admirals Watson and Crick, named for the scientists who discovered the chemical composition of DNA. That's just one of many little scientific in-jokes for the parents who are watching.) It's a really cute show that does a great job of explaining basic science concepts so that kids will understand them.

I love the show overall, but I especially like the guest stars. Disney does a great job of choosing a character that perfectly represents a specific person. 

The most recent episode featured the voice talents of Alton Brown, host of Cutthroat Kitchen among other shows on Food Network, as a chef named Lysander Floovox. It also featured a scientist named Professor Rubicon who is voiced by the legendary Bill Nye, the Science Guy. Other guest stars have included Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher, Star Trek: TNG) as Commander S'Leet, Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker, Star Wars) as Gadfly Garnet, and George Takei (Hikaru Sulu, Star Trek) as Spectrix. It's a sci-fi nerd's dream come true!

Halloween is coming to the Disney Channels!

It's nearly time for Halloween again, and that means movies, magic, and fun, fun, fun! Disney Junior is set to kick off their Boo For You Halloween programming starting this today. Special episodes of Sofia the First, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, and Doc McStuffins will appear each Friday all month long.

The Disney Channel is also planning a special Monstober line-up featuring Halloween episodes from several of their popular series as well as Disney Channel original movies. New episodes of Dog with a Blog, Girl Meets World, and Jessie air tonight. Phineas and Ferb scare up some fun in "Night of the Living Pharmacists" alongside a new Gravity Falls on Saturday night, while Austin and Ally and Liv and Maddie will be on Sunday. Some of the movies this month include Under Wraps, Girl vs. Monster,  both Twitches films, and all four Halloweentown movies. And since it's Disney,  there will most likely be a new Halloween movie as well.

Disney XD will also get in on the fun beginning October 17.  Lab Rats, Mighty Med, the 7D, and Marvel's Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. will all have special Halloween episodes. An animated cross-over featuring the cast of Jessie and Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man: Web-Warriors is also set to debut in October.

With all of the new episodes and great movies,  it should be a Monstober to remember. And since Halloween is my favorite time of year,  I can't wait!

Sheriff Callie's Wild West

Have you and your little ones watched Sheriff Callie's Wild West yet? It is so adorable! I'm not sure who enjoys it more, Bean or me. We know it's supposed to be for little kids, but the animation is cute, the songs are infectious, and each story has a great moral lesson. I also like that no one, not even the Sheriff, is above being the one who needs to learn something new.

Sheriff Callie, voiced by Mandy Moore, is a calico cat who is the law in the town of Nice and Friendly Corners. She uses her magical noodle lasso to save the day or rescue a friend in need. Her horse, Sparky, is the fastest horse in the west. The hilarious Deputy Peck, voiced by Lucas Grabeel of High School Musical fame, is a woodpecker who likes everything to be orderly as well as nice and friendly. His mule, Clementine, takes him everywhere he needs to go, although not always as quickly as Peck would like. His best friend is Toby the cactus, a funny little saguaro who just loves to dance. There are several other towns people who share in Callie's adventures. Uncle Bun, the bunny who owns the general store, and Tio Tortuga, a wise old dessert tortoise and Uncle Bun's best friend. Ella Cowbelle, a milk cow, owns Ella's milkshake saloon. Dirty Dan and Dusty are javelinas and prospectors as well as brothers. Priscilla Skunk is quite prissy and loves flowers and other beautiful things, but her cousin Farmer Stinky is a grubby farmer. The town doctor is a cheerful duck named Doc Quackers. But my favorite characters are a sibling trio of prairie dogs that sing old country-style harmonies. Several other dessert creatures make occasional appearances, such as Governor Groundhog and Cody, a roadrunner who works for the Pony Express. There's also a Buffalo who owns a jackalope ranch and Mr. Dillo, the blacksmith, who is an armadillo that rolls up into a ball whenever he gets scared.

I love Sheriff Callie's Wild West. The characters are very sweet and the stories are gentle lessons that are great for any child. So if you are looking for a new show to watch as a family, be sure to check out Sheriff Callie's Wild West. You'll be happy you did!

Pumpkin Templates from Disney

Disney has created some great pumpkin carving templates over the years. Many of them are available for free on Spoonful. This year is no exception. The Sofia the First template is so cute! I also like the Rapunzel template. They are cute and fun without being the least bit scary. There are absolutely hilarious Phineas, Ferb, and Agent P templates from Phineas and Ferb that I know Bean would love, and a stylized Sulley or Mike from Monster's University  too. For something a little more Halloween oriented, try the Stitch witch,  Donald Duck Devil, or Vampire Mickey templates. My personal favorite is the Little Green Alien from Toy Story. I just love those guys and they are super cute in pumpkin form. I suspect my sister prefers the spooky Jack Skellington. I think that pumpkin is up to something. A few years ago, I carved the Maleficent pumpkin. It was a little tricky, but it turned out awesome. So if you need a few ideas for your Halloween pumpkins, be sure to check out Spoonful. Disney has created a new channel perfect for little ones. Aimed at the pre-school and elementary school set, Disney Junior is where the magic never ends, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Featuring shows such as Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and Chuggington, Disney Junior is also the home of new shows like Doc McStuffins and Playhouse Disney classics like Rolie Polie Olie. Personally, I'm hoping they'll bring back other Playhouse Disney favorites, like PB&J Otter. I loved them and Rolie Polie Olie, although I didn't see them until I was in my 20s.
