When I can't make it to Disney, I love to watch Behind the Scenes Disney shows. They offer a rare glimpse into areas of the parks that few ever see. And they really can help with the Disney crazies, those times when you have no idea when you'll make it back to a Disney park, but you really, really want to go. If this is you, Destination America has the perfect cure. This week, they will be airing a full week of prime time Disney programming, including the premiere of the new Walt Disney World: Resort Hotels.

Outlet Store vs. Park, or How to buy the cool stuff without spending a fortune

I love going to Disney World and strolling through the shops browsing for fun new items to add to my ever-growing Disney collection. However, unless you find a rare sale or clearance item, you can end up spending a small fortune. A few years ago, I heard about the three Disney outlet stores located near Disney World. One, Character Outlet, is fairly small and sells both Disney and Universal Studios merchandise at a decent discount. There are two that sell all Disney items and are licensed Disney stores. Disney's Character Premiere, has several items that are discounted 50% or more, but also a lot of items that are regular price. The last store, Character Warehouse, sells items removed from the parks to make way for new merchandise, at a steep discount. This is our favorite Disney store. We've purchased a lot of fun items there at a great price. They have had everything from toys to Pal Mickey costumes, to t-shirts from Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party and EPCOT's Food and Wine Festival, all for 50-70% off. They usually have a wide selection and a wide variety of price ranges, with something to suit everyone. We've purchased pins there for $4 or less, picture frames from Tower of Terror ($1) and Star Tours ($5 and it even lights up!), scrapbooking items for 75% off the original price, and a ton more. This store also gives stickers to kids that come in, just like the stickers given out in the parks. It's a little farther from the parks than the others, but offers the best value.

One of the best ways to save money at Disney, is to buy your souvenirs from an outlet store at some time during your trip. Because we usually drive down, we drive right past our favorite store on the way to the parks. As a result, we like to stop BEFORE going into the parks and pick out a few new things. We always budget for souvenirs and allow Bean to pick out a new toy and accessories at Character Warehouse, then don't purchase much in the parks. She usually gets more this way for the same amount of money that we would have spent in the parks. Also, this means that she has something new and exciting before we even get to the parks and so she's less likely to fall in love with something in the parks. If you want to go to the parks first and are spending several days, you still may want to check out the selection at the outlets at some point during your trip. We have often found the same or similar items from the parks in the outlets at a much lower price. It's a fantastic way to save money and still make the kids very happy.

Holiday Magic at the Disney Parks

Disney recently released a gorgeous new book that shares the magic of the parks during the fall and winter holidays. "Holiday Magic at the Disney Parks: Celebrations Around the World from Fall to Winter" is filled with more than 1900 photos of all twelve parks around the world as well as multiple cruise ships and resorts. The authors uncovered fascinating stories and hidden gems about the parks' holiday celebrations, some of which can be found in this video. 

Did you know that Disneyland first celebrated Christmas with a circus? Crazy, right. If you'd like to learn more, "Holiday Magic at the Disney Parks: Celebrations Around the World from Fall to Winter" can be found at booksellers everywhere. 

Disney Parks Memories Sweepstakes

If your family is like mine, you probably have lots of great memories of times spent in Disney Parks. Disney is celebrating these memories with a sweepstakes in the month of February. There will be four weekly drawings for family vacations in one of the Disney Parks. Weeks one and two offer 4-days, and 3-nights at Disneyland in California. Week three is 5-days, 4-nights at Disney World in Florida. The final drawing, in week four is for 7-days, 6-nights at ANY Disney Resort, worldwide. Each trip includes airfare, ground transfer, hotel accommodations, and park tickets. Winning any of these trips would be an awesome chance to create new family memories with Disney. Visit the site daily to enter the sweepstakes and to download that day's free daily digital download. The downloads so far have been super cute picture frames to display treasured Disney memories. You can also share your own memories on the site through photos, videos, and stories. Disney will share these memories along with others on the site.

Also, the parks will be celebrating guests' memories created within the parks. Most nights at either Cinderella Castle in Florida or It's a Small World in California, photos and videos taken by PhotoPass photographers will be projected onto the building as part of a new celebration called "The Magic, The Memories & You!" They will feature images captured in the Magic Kingdom or Disneyland that day celebrating all the fun and excitement guests have enjoyed. The photos fly by fairly quickly, so you might want to capture the show on video, just in case they've used a photo of your family. This new program sounds like it will be a lot of fun and should get people sharing their memories and creating new ones featuring Disney.

Halloween Novelties at Disney World

I'm rather addicted to collecting the Halloween themed food novelties from Disney World. This year, there will be a ton of fun, spooky treasures to find throughout the parks in September and October. First up is the popcorn bucket and travel mug featuring the artwork seen above. The bucket can be found at carts in the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, and Disney Springs. It can be refilled for $1.75 at any park or Disney Springs popcorn cart. The travel mug will be available at all resort hotels and is refillable at the resorts for the duration of your stay.

Did you miss out on last year's Oogie Boogie Popcorn Bucket? Well, you're in luck. A new glow-in-the-dark version will be released exclusively at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. This bucket is refillable for $1.75 at popcorn carts in all four parks and Disney Springs.

Starting in mid-September, you'll be able to find this light-up Cauldron Popcorn Bucket. The cauldron features a hidden Mickey and will be available at all four parks and Disney Springs. It is also refillable for $1.75 at any park or Disney Springs popcorn cart.

The Poison Apple Glow Cube has finally made it to Disney World. The green, light-up apple can be found in specialty drinks at both the AbracadaBar at the Boardwalk Resort and at Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar in Disney Springs.

The Poison Apple Stein has made a comeback, but this year, it's green! It can be found at several outdoor vending spots throughout Animal Kingdom.

The Headless Horseman Straw Clip can be found galloping around at the Magic Kingdom.

The final novelty was only available in CarsLand last year. This year, it will arrive at EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. These novelties tend to be very popular and sell out quickly, so you may want to look for them early in the day. Which one will you be looking for?

New Pins Coming to Disney Parks in 2017

Are you a pin trader? Trading and collecting pins at Disney can be a lot of fun. It can be one part treasure hunt and one part race when your family tries to hunt down that last pin to complete a collection. Disney recently shared a sneak peek at some of the new pins that will be coming to Disney Parks this year. It looks like there will be quite a few fun sets.

The Jungle Cruise 45th Anniversary collection will be released in Florida on May 11, 2017. The "Essence of Evil" and "Doorways to Disney" collections will be a shared collection between Disneyland and Disney World. The "Piece of Disney History" collection will only be available at Disney World, while the "Pin Trading Tales" and "Charming Characters" collections will only be available at Disneyland. 

A new Pirates of the Caribbean collection will arrive in Parks in mid-March. The pins, which celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Disneyland ride, will all be limited edition, with a special pin only available to Annual Passholders. 

The Emoji pins will come to the Parks in late summer. The characters, which appear in the "As Told by Emoji" videos as well as the Emoji Blitz game, include Anna, Elsa, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, Minnie, and Stitch.

Star Wars Products Coming to Disney Parks

Disney has created some fantastic Star Wars inspired products in recent years. This fall, they have even more incredible merchandise.

First up is an Imperial Comlink Bluetooth Communicator. It looks just like the one Luke Skywalker used to call C-3PO from trash compactor in Star Wars: A New Hope. It can be used to take calls and play music when connected a smart phone. It's rechargeable and comes with a belt clip. I love it and can't wait see it in person.

Starting in mid-December, you can find a remote controlled Mouse Droid. The Droid, whichmakes sounds and includes rechargeable batteries, looks like the one Chewbacca roars at On Death Star.

A second set of Ewok plush will be available from Disney Parks online store this fall. The set of six characters includes another Wicket, Tokkat, Latara, Widdle, Shodu, Winds. A basket of Ewoks will also include an additional character, Kaink. These new Ewoks will be available individually at Disney Parks in December.

Finally, the Starspeeder 1000 viewer will be available again. The set, which has been updated with a new destination disk featuring Jakku from The Force Awakens, plays dialogue from the Star Tours - The Adventure Continues ride.

Adventureland Tsum Tsum

The latest Disney Parks Tsum Tsum feature characters inspired by Adventureland. The set of seven Tsums includes a Jungle Cruise Skipper, Pirates of the Caribbean Parrot, Orange Bird, Jungle Cruise hippo, and a tiki and two birds from the Tiki Room.

Disney had a bit of fun photographing the Tsums in their native habitats. The Adventureland-themed set will be available at select locations at Disneyland and Disney World on October 11. It will alsobe available from the Disney Parks online store and the Shop Disney Parks app. 

This little blue bird Tsum Tsum is from a collection that will arrive in Parks in early 2017. You'll have a "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" time stacking this new set. It looks like the next set may feature characters inspired by Frontierland.

Haunted Mansion Wishables Have Arrived In Disney Parks

The latest batch of Wishables to arrive in Disney Parks are quite a ghostly bunch. In case you don't know, Wishables are a delightful assortment of adorable little stuffies representing characters, mostly from Disney rides. They are available as blind bags with one open edition figure from each set. Previous collections include Pirates of the Caribbean, Toy Story, the Little Mermaid, Nemo, Splash Mountain, Stitch, Mickey, Minnie, and some truly adorable Parks Food. And now there are Haunted Mansion Wishables as well.

The five ghosts in this set include:

In the Magic Kingdom, even more fun starts on September 15. The cavalcade of characters will feature Mickey, Minnie, Pluto and their pals decked out in their Halloween finery. Chip and Dale will be sporting their costumes over in Frontierland. Other dressed up Disney characters will be riding the horse-drawn trolley down Main Street, U.S.A.

And for the first time outside of Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, guests of all ages are invited to join in the costume fun. Rogue One Merchandise

Disney has created a huge collection of merchandise to celebrate the upcoming film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The film revolves around a rogue band of resistance fighters who seek to steal the Death Star plans and bring hope to the galaxy. It arrives in theaters on December 16, but we won't have to wait as long for the merchandise, which will begin arriving at Disney Parks on September 30.

There's a wide variety of shirts for women, several with more style than the usual tees.

There's also clothing from Her Universe, including a dress covered with images of the Death Star and some leggings fit for a Rebel.

Graphic goodies include images of the Death Star and one that resembles a pilots uniform.

A set of limited release Vinylmation Shoretroopers begin a large selection of collectibles. There will also be a great variety of open edition pins and a 14 pin mystery collection, with one pin revealed and one a mystery. If you like making droids in the Droid Factory, be sure to look for a set of four Astromech figures inspired by the film.

At Walt Disney World, guests can find two limited release Magic Bands. 15 different designs for personalized phone cases for select iPhone and Samsung devices will be available at D-Tech on Demand stations around Disneyland and Disney World.
